TECHNICAL ISSUE DETAILS

The 2-valve Moto Guzzi V-Twins all use a BOSCH field controlled alternator with a separate regulator and rectifier. When diagnosing these systems the first thing to check is the resistance of the field rotor winding as this is a very common part to fail.

You can do this by removing the carbon brushes that run against the copper rotor slip rings and then measure the resistance between those slip rings. The resistance reading should be between 4.2 and 5.2 Ohms.

Typically when these rotors fail the resistance drops to 1 Ohm (almost a short) and in the process it often times takes out the regulator circuit as well.

Our ESR450 is a great replacement regulator/rectifier that replaces both regulator and rectifier unit with one single modern component.

Contact ElectroSport if you have any trouble diagnosing your system. We are here to help.
