73 Duster w/ HID's

Well I guess I should use this post to introduce myself. I’m Evan Grist, the new Research & Development guy at Electrosport.  I’ll be posting here on the blog as much as possible to keep you informed of the interesting projects going on here at Electrosport.

I figured I’d give you all an update on a recent  HID install. I recently traded my 1964 Plymouth Barracuda (built 318, 4speed with a Hurst shifter, very fast car!) for the 1973 Plymouth Duster you see above. It has an original 225ci slant six engine, and gets excellent mileage. However, it was sorely lacking in lighting output with the stock 7″ sealed beams, making driving at night a challenge to say the least.

Well my buddy finally convinced me to throw a light on my dirt bike to ride with him at night. At first I was a little bit skeptical because I have never rode at night before, except for riding double on quads out at Ocotillo Wells and Borrego which is not a good idea by the way. At least for me it isn’t, I always seem to run myself over, so I try and stay away from quads. Anyways I put a HID headlight (http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-501.php), a ESL960 60w lighting stator (http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-543.php) , LED taillight (http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-1720.php) and a ESR600 (http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-622.php) Regulator/Rectifier on my personal 04 Kawasaki KX250. I must admit I did cheat alittle bit because the ESL960 stator is not the stator that we have listed for the KX250. The ESL960 is for the CRF250R/450R, however I was not satisfied with running just a 35w halogen bulb because you might as well just ride with a candle. So I figured out a way to run the L960 on my bike. This sooner or later will be the new stator for the KX, but I am currently doing some testing on it to make sure it works flawlessly. So pretty much I am the test dummie for this new part. I must say with this HID light I absolutely love riding at night, it adds a whole new level of sketchiness to riding.

Even Next to Steven’s (Tech Support) RM in broad daylight you can see the HID in my KX is ridiculously brighter.

This project was especially fun for us because it features two of our own ElectroSport Team Members actually performing the installation.   Trent and Marcus may look a little uncomfortable in front of the camera, but despite their apparent stage fright, the installation went smoothly and Trent was out cruising in no time J

 If you are the type of guy who feels like “Great” isn’t good enough, you might also want to give us a call to learn about our brand new HID lighting option for our Dakar kits.  When you make the move to High Intensity Discharge Lighting (HID), you get 300% the light output of standard Halogen lighting but with the same 35watt electrical draw.  In addition, HID lights last four times longer than Halogen and are highly resistant to vibration, shock and heat.  If you want to see and be seen, Dakar is the way to go!  With HID, you can see farther and be seen sooner.

I just finished up putting an ElectroSport HID2 lighting kit on a Service Honda Junior R.  This bike is pretty cool.  It is a CRF250R motor stuck into a 150 frame.  We used one of our ESL960 stators, a Dakar battery, and a ESR600 regulator/rectifier to power the light.  The headlight shell is one of our Dakar lights with the HID upgrade.

As you can see, these lights are stupid bright.  Even better, these come in an optional 2 lamp bulb.  Two HID lights in a single bulb!  This install was with a single lamp only due to the small motor’s stator.  The ballasts are really compact and fit so well that you barely notice they are there.

So, Anaheim-Fullerton Harley dropped off a new Harley Davidson Electra Glide for us to test fit our new HID headlight kit.  This is really exciting because these HID kits are awesome!  The amount of light they put out… well, it is like bolting the sun to the front of your bike.  Seriously.  I really wish that I could be a fly on the wall of the service department when they get this kit installed…
